ALMENA TOWNSHIP, Mich. —An Almena Township resident was pronounced dead Monday, Jan. 25, 2021 after a house fire.
Van Buren County deputies said in a written statement that a second resident was able to escape the fire.
Around 7:15 p.m. Monday, deputies were sent to a home in the 45000 block of County Road 653.
When they arrived, they found smoke coming from the doorway, with one person standing near it.
The person standing outside was escorted away, and a second person was reported to be in the house.
Deputies said they tried to get the second person to leave the house, but were unsuccessful. The Paw Paw Fire Department began working to put out the fire and find the second resident.
The resident was found unresponsive and life-saving measures were attempted, but were unsuccessful.
A Van Buren County deputy was taken to Lakeview Emergency Room for smoke inhalation, and was later discharged, according to the statement.
Deputies were still investigating the cause of the fire Tuesday, Jan. 26.
